Madrid landmark walk: Sol, Plaza Mayor and the palace

Madrid offers a useful choice between a compact old-centre walk and a longer museum-bound outing. Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace form the western group; the Prado sits to the east.

Choose the walk that fits your day

A smaller first outing

Begin at Puerta del Sol and continue to Plaza Mayor. Add the Royal Palace when you have more time for the surrounding streets and squares.

When you have more time

Visit the Prado as a separate eastward extension from the centre. Leave a proper block of time for the collection if you book a museum visit.

These are our editorial route suggestions, not measured itineraries or an accessibility assessment. Live Trails build from nearby available Charms and may select different stops.

The Madrid collection, stop by stop

  1. 01

    Puerta del Sol

Start in the pedestrianised square. Pick a clear meeting point before checking which Charms are nearest.

  2. 02

    Plaza Mayor

Continue into the old centre and leave room to explore the arcades. Keep entrances and restaurant access clear.

  3. 03

    Royal Palace

Make the palace the western finish. Check visitor access separately if your plan includes going inside.

  4. 04

    Prado Museum

Save this for the eastward outing rather than doubling back under time pressure. Museum admission is not included with Passported.

Visitor access comes first

Passported is free to download, with optional in-app purchases. It does not include attraction tickets, transport or permission to enter private areas. A Charm may be unavailable if its pin cannot be reached safely and legally. Never cross a barrier, road or waterway just to claim it.
